Samson week 9
Chat time.
Who likes getting their hair cut? Maybe some of the girls have never had their hair cut but most of the boys will have. Can you tell me what happens at the hairdressers? What would happen if you never got your hair cut at all? How long do you think it would grow? The person with the longest hair in the world has hair this long. Measure out 18 .5 feet with a tape measure. Thats really really long hair! How long do you think it would take to wash that much hair!!
Today we are going to hear about someone in the Bible who had very long hair. But it wasnt because he wanted to look super cool or anything, it was because God told him not to cut his hair. His name was Samson and he lived a very long time ago. God said that if Samson never cut his hair then God would make him really really strong. So Samson grew his hair and never had a haircut and as he grew up he got stronger and stronger. He was so strong that one day a lion jumped out at him and Samson fought the lion with his bare hands and won! He was so strong that when he went out with the army to fight he killed 1,000 soldiers all by himself. All his enemies were scared of him because he was so strong. Why was he strong? Can you remember? Yes, because he didnt cut his hair.
One day Samson met a girl he really liked. She was called Delilah. Samson loved her so he told her the secret of his strength - that he was only strong because of his long hair. Delilah was not a very nice lady and she went and told Samsons enemies that if they cut off his hair they would be able to catch him because he wouldnt be strong any more. So the enemies asked Delilah to cut Samsons hair. She waited until he was asleep and then she took some big scissors like these and chopped off all his hair! When Samson woke up he wasnt strong any more. His enemies came and took him away and threw him in prison. Poor Samson!
When he was in prison Samson talked to God. He was very sad that he had told Delilah about his hair. He said sorry to God and asked God if he could have his strength back. His hair started growing again. At first it was very short like ( pick a child) 's hair. After a while it had grown a bit longer like (child)s hair. Samson could feel his strength coming back.
One day Samsons enemies took him to the temple to make fun of him and laugh and be mean. ' Look there is Samson!' they said.' He used to be the strongest man in the world and now he is weak and useless and rubbish' Samson put his hands against the walls of the temple and he prayed ' God please make me strong one more time' Then he pushed and pushed and guess what happened? He pushed the walls right over and the whole temple came crashing down on top of everyone. All Samsons enemies were killed. Samson was killed too. That was sad. But it showed everyone that Samson believed in a big strong amazing God.
Lets do our story sequencing now
Craft. Use little peat plantpots. Draw a face on them then get the kids to add soil and spider plant babies. Tell them that this is like Samson and his hair and that the plant hair will grow just like Samsons hair. Alternatively use paper plates as faces and stick on wool for long hair.
Singing time. Remember that it was God who made Samson strong. God can make us strong too because He is the biggest, strongest mightiest person in the whole universe
